A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was made public, sparking debate about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.

Market Movement in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the hours before former President Trump declared on the weekend that the president had been seized.

One account, which registered on the site in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However these probabilities had climbed to eleven percent by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in market sentiment right before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on non-public details," commented an industry expert.

A handful of other platform users also profited tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Politicians are starting to take note.

A new rule presented on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the United States, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to current affairs.

This sector were examined under the previous administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is illegal in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting arena.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
