The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
